The Real Cost of Building an MVP in 2025

Why MVP Cost Estimates Vary So Wildly
Search "how much does an MVP cost" and you'll get answers ranging from $5,000 to $500,000.
Both extremes are technically correct, which makes the range almost useless.
The truth is that MVP development cost depends on five variables:
This article breaks each of these down so you can build a realistic budget — not the fantasy budget or the nightmare budget.
By Product Type: The Base Cost
These ranges assume a simple MVP with core features only, no complex integrations, and a professional North American development team.
Web Application MVP: $25,000 – $70,000
A web app with user authentication, a core feature loop, a basic admin panel, and deployment to a cloud provider. Think: a simple project management tool, a booking platform, or a content subscription service.
Mobile App MVP (iOS or Android): $40,000 – $90,000
Native iOS or Android: authentication, 4–6 core screens, API integration, and App Store/Google Play submission. Cross-platform (React Native) for both platforms simultaneously: add $15,000–$30,000 to the single-platform cost.
SaaS Platform MVP: $50,000 – $120,000
Multi-tenant architecture, subscription billing (Stripe), user management, a core dashboard, and basic analytics. This is more complex than a single-user web app because of the infrastructure required to safely separate customer data.
Internal Tool MVP: $15,000 – $50,000
Typically simpler UI, focused workflow, and integration-heavy. Often cheaper because there's less design work and no consumer-facing polish required.
Marketplace MVP: $60,000 – $150,000
Two-sided marketplace with buyer and seller profiles, search, messaging, and payment escrow. Among the most complex MVP types because of the two-sided experience and the payment complexity.
What Drives Cost Within a Category
Feature scope is the biggest driver. Every feature you add to your MVP adds time. Adding Stripe payments: +$3,000–$5,000. Adding real-time chat: +$8,000–$15,000. Adding AI-powered recommendations: +$10,000–$30,000. Each additional user role adds complexity and cost.
Third-party integrations. Every integration with an external API carries risk: poorly documented APIs, rate limits, and edge cases that require engineering time to handle. Budget $2,000–$8,000 per significant integration depending on the API quality.
Design complexity. If you're providing Figma designs, you save $10,000–$20,000 vs. having the team design from scratch. If you need custom animations, complex data visualizations, or a premium design system, add $15,000–$30,000.
Auth and security requirements. Basic email/password auth is table stakes. Adding Google/Apple SSO costs $2,000–$3,000. Adding SSO via SAML for enterprise clients: $5,000–$10,000. Adding two-factor authentication: $2,000–$4,000.
Team Geography and Model
North American Agency (Canada/US): $150 – $250/hour
Highest cost, highest quality baseline. Strong communication, cultural alignment, and accountability. For a 16-week MVP at 300 hours: $45,000–$75,000.
Eastern European Agency: $60 – $120/hour
Excellent technical talent, good English, 6–8 hour time zone difference. A pragmatic choice that many successful startups use. For the same 300 hours: $18,000–$36,000.
South/Southeast Asian Agency: $25 – $60/hour
Lowest cost. Quality varies dramatically. Requires more hands-on management, clearer specifications, and stronger QA. For the same hours: $7,500–$18,000.
Freelancer: $50 – $200/hour
Can be excellent or catastrophic. Without a team around them, a single freelancer is a single point of failure. Great for small, well-defined projects. Risky for a full MVP.
No-code platforms: $5,000 – $25,000
For very simple MVPs, Bubble, Webflow, or Glide can get you to market faster and cheaper. The tradeoff: limited scalability, vendor lock-in, and performance limitations.
The Hidden Costs Most Founders Overlook
Discovery and scoping: $3,000–$10,000
A proper discovery process — user interviews, competitive analysis, technical scoping — is not always included in the development quote. It should be. Skipping it costs more in rework.
UI/UX Design: $8,000–$25,000
Some development quotes include design, many don't. Clarify what "design" means in every quote you receive. Wireframes? High-fidelity Figma? Responsive states? Design system?
QA and testing: $5,000–$15,000
Many quotes include perfunctory testing. A genuine QA process — device matrix testing, performance testing, edge case coverage — is a separate workstream.
Infrastructure setup: $2,000–$5,000
AWS, GCP, or Azure environment setup, CI/CD pipeline configuration, staging environment, and monitoring. This is often billed separately.
Ongoing hosting costs: $100–$1,000/month
Budget for this from day one. Cloud hosting for a basic MVP runs $100–$300/month. As you scale, this grows significantly.
Post-launch support: $3,000–$8,000/month
The first 30–90 days after launch always surface bugs, performance issues, and user feedback that requires fast response. Budget for this.
How to Build a Realistic Budget
Here's a practical formula:
For a typical North American-built web SaaS MVP with 6 core features, Stripe integration, and auth:
- Development: 350 hours × $175/hour = $61,250
- Design: $12,000
- QA: $6,000
- Infrastructure setup: $3,000
- 30% buffer: $24,675
- Estimated total: ~$107,000
This surprises most founders. But it's accurate. And this is the budget that builds a proper product, not a prototype.
When to Invest More and When to Spend Less
Invest more when:
- Your core experience is design-dependent (aesthetics matter to your user)
- You're in a competitive market where quality is a differentiator
- You have a B2B enterprise audience that expects polish
- You have the budget and need to move fast
- You're still validating core assumptions (you might pivot)
- Your early users are internal and quality tolerance is higher
- The core feature can be tested with a lower-fidelity product
- You're using the MVP to raise capital (not to acquire customers)
What We Charge at Audax Ventures
In the spirit of transparency: at Audax Ventures, most MVPs we build range from $35,000 to $90,000 CAD, depending on scope and design complexity.
We work with a fixed-price discovery sprint ($5,000–$8,000) before any development quote. This protects both parties — you get a detailed estimate based on real understanding of your project, and we scope accurately.
If that range doesn't fit your budget, we'll tell you that honestly and suggest alternatives. We'd rather not start a project than start one we can't deliver well.
